Building Connections in the Classroom through Socratic Seminar with Bill Bajczyk
The Socratic Method is defined as a democratic way of thinking. This workshop led teachers through ways to implement this approach in their lesson plans. An example: poly science class might take a poem from history and investigate in depth as a piece of written material. This approach encourages students of all abilities to express themselves and to investigate a word, idea or philosophy in great depth. This workshop focused on a work by Francis Bacon titled, "Revenge".
This workshop brought in students from Begich Middle School to demonstrate how to introduce this type of approach in the classroom. Students discussed revenge in their world - from the classroom to the bus. An example came up in terms of punishment for things like name calling or being physically attached. It was important to them to seek a satisfactory result and that it was more honorable to fight it out and not let it go. This response allowed for deeper dialogue, leading to discussion about long term consequences for negative choices.
It was an eye opening experience for everyone, students and teachers.
